Resilience Manifesto: A Tribute to Zo Zayong (1926-2000)
Zo Zayong is an art hero who dedicated his life to savaging Korean folk art as it was thrown away in Korea’s rush toward Westernization and modernization after the war, colonial occupation and the collapse of the 500 year Joseon dynasty (1392-1910)
Zo Zayong recognized that folk art held the imagination, wishes and hopes of countless generations of everyday Korean people. At the time, the ruling elites saw folk art as low-class, trashy and embarrassing.
This show is a tribute to Zo Zayong’s mission and the resilience of all people living through challenging times and devastating historical circumstances.
